Peter Capaldi’s Art School Guitar Solos Playlist- Q magazine

For those who don’t have access to Q and are curious as to what PC had to say about his musical choices here is a transcript of his section of the magazine.
Art School Guitar Solos from Peter Capaldi
1. Brian Eno Baby’s On Fire (1974)
“You have this drumbeat that batters along, then this guitar solo comes in sounding like a maths professor on acid.”
2. Television Marquee Moon (1977)
“Is it punk? Rock? Jazz? We all arrived at art school dressed as Neil Young. Then punk happened and it was all peroxide hair, earrings and leather trousers.”
3. Suede Animal Nitrate (1993)
“What I love about this is the sleaze and Bernard Butler’s guitar playing, which is relentlessly inventive.”
4. David Bowie Boys Keep Swinging (1979)
“At art school we’d never heard anything like Adrian Belew’s guitar solo. It’s so distorted, you just couldn’t figure out how to play it.”
5. The Jimi Hendrix Experience All Along the Watchtower (1968)              “There’s a malevolence to this that heads towards you like those helicopters over the ocean [in Forrest Gump].”                                                                            6. British Sea Power The Great Skua (2008)
“The skua is a sea bird, and this sounds like a total seascape.”
7. The Velvet Underground Sweet Jane (1970)
“This is in the art school guitar pantheon because of the chord sequence. You can also hear it in Bowie’s Queen Bitch and The Psychadelic Furs’ Pretty in Pink.”
8. Talking Heads Electric Guitar (1979)
“It’s called Electric Guitar and it sounds like somebody learning to play the guitar.”
9. Magazine Shot by Both Sides (1978)
“This is fantastic because of John McGeoch’s guitar. I met him at the time. He was far too grand to talk to me.”
10. The Skids The Saints are Coming (1978)
“Richard Jobson once asked me to play guitar on his solo LP. I never heard from him again. It broke my heart…”
